Job Summary
Inkomoko has an all hazards approach to safety and security. The Head of Safety and Security is a key leadership role responsible for ensuring the wellbeing of staff, operations, and our clients (while interacting with Inkomoko). The position involves strategic oversight and execution of safety and security protocols and policies and the implementation of risk management systems in complex and often dynamic operating environments.
The Head of Safety and Security will develop and manage safety and security policies, advise senior management on key safety and security risks, and develop strategic training plans to ensure all staff have the tools to keep themselves safe while at work.
The Head of Safety and Security will be the technical thought partner to our country-level security teams to ensure policies, procedures, and training plans are cascaded effectively to the country level with full compliance. This role ensures that the organisation can operate effectively while keeping our staff safe while at work.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Security Strategy & Risk Management
- Develop and implement safety and security strategies and operational guidelines to be cascaded to country-level security teams to manage program site operations
- Conduct regular, safety and security assessments and threat analyses of operational environments and adjust strategies as needed.
- Provide recommendations to senior management on mitigation measures for identified risks.
- Design and update security plans, contingency plans, and emergency evacuation protocols at the regional level and in partnership with the country-level security teams
- Establish and maintain robust communication systems to inform staff of security-related developments and responses
Staff Safety
- Establish a strong safety culture for all staff, including non-Inkomoko staff (volunteers, consultants) that is inclusive of our duty of care to our clients and communities
- Set high standards to be cascaded to all staff for regular safety and security briefings and training for staff to ensure preparedness.
- Provide crisis management support during incidents involving staff security, including medical evacuations or other emergencies.
- Establish Inkomoko health and safety requirements and endure country level compliance
Security Operations
In partnership with country level security teams, ensure consistency in the following areas:
- Implementation of standard physical security measures for offices, residences, and vehicles.
- Proper management of local security staff by country-level security teams (security guards, drivers, etc.)
- Ensure country teams are properly managing the security of the organization’s assets, including sensitive information and equipment.
Security Incident Management & Reporting
- Proactively audit current incident management reporting systems and develop effective solutions to ensure staff have inclusive means to report incidents
- Lead the investigation and response to any security incidents that cannot be handled solely at the country level, including incidents of violence, natural disasters, or other emergencies.
- Act as advisor and thought partner to country-level teams to handle incidents or emergencies
- Provide detailed reports on security incidents, outlining lessons learned and recommended changes to existing procedures.
- Ensure that all incidents are documented and managed according to internal reporting procedures.
Training and Capacity Building
- Develop and implement safety and security training programs for staff, volunteers and partners, ensuring all are equipped with the necessary knowledge to safely interact with our clients and communities
- Conduct safety and security awareness workshops, simulations, and scenario-based exercises for staff.
- Monitor staff adherence to security procedures and provide guidance when needed in partnership with country-level security teams
- In collaboration with the Managing Directors and Ops Director, develop professional development plans to build the internal capacity of the country-level security teams
Security Service Providers
- Serve as the main point of contact with our key security service providers – including country-level and regional security partners
- In partnership with procurement, manage active contracts and ensure proactive renewal and coverage for all countries (e.g. emergency medical services, regional security advisory services, and kidnapping and ransom coverage)
- Ensure service providers are utilized to widen Inkomoko’s information network, provide additional services during crisis, and support to keep staff and offices safe
Educational Qualifications, Experience, & Skills Required
- Bachelor’s degree (advanced degree preferred) in risk, disaster or security or emergency management or a related field
- Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in security management, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership role within a humanitarian, development, or conflict-related environment.
- Proven experience in managing complex security operations in dynamic and sometimes high-risk settings
- ASIS Certified Protection Professional (CPP) or equivalent preferred
- Experience in designing and delivering security training programs for diverse staff groups
- Experience with emergency response, crisis management, and evacuation procedures
- Displays a high level of empathy, emotional intelligence and compassion for colleagues faced with challenging situations
- Demonstrated experience designing security protocols, trainings, and policies for individuals from vulnerable or marginalized backgrounds
- English speakers with additional language fluency in French and/or Arabic are strongly preferred.
