Job Summary
Responsible for ensuring that all transactions conducted by the Bank are in accordance with Shariah Principles. Undertake close co-ordination with the Shariah Supervisory Board (SSB) to ensure that the Bank’s operations are Shariah Compliant.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- To assume the position of Head of the Shariah Audit Department of the Bank and to plan, organize and supervise the work of the division.
- To act as secretary of the SSB and to assist in Shari’ah Board Meeting preparations and communication with the Shariah Board.
- Preparing quarterly Shariah audit status reports and submission of the same to the Shariah Supervisory Board and to the Board of Directors of the Bank.
- Ensuring that all bank branches, departments and affiliates are committed to the implementation of the Shariah decisions in accordance with the forms, contracts, agreements and procedures approved by the SSB.
- Developing internal Shariah control systems to determine whether Shariah audit systems are adequate and in accordance with overall Bank policies and procedures.
- Preparation and implementation of the annual expense budget of the Shariah Audit Unit.
- Providing Shariah consultation to Board of Directors, senior management, various departments and branches of the Bank.
- Offering training courses in Islamic banking for the bank’s staff.
- Develop policies, guidelines and manuals for Shariah Department
- All other assignments that may be deemed appropriate, to be undertaken by you for the interests of the bank.
Educational Qualifications, Skills, and Experience Required
- Hold a bachelor’s degree in Shariah Law. Master’s degree an added advantage.
- Banking related qualifications a plus.
- Professional qualifications such as CSAA
- Have a minimum of Five (5) years relevant work experience in a similar position with proven result-oriented track record.
- Have strong customer service orientation/experience.
- Experience in Shariah Compliant Banking or a Financial institution is an added advantage.
- Understand the Banking Act, Central Bank Regulations, general laws relating to Banking.
- Understand and implement processes and procedures
- Have a high sense of diplomacy, accuracy and attention for detail.
- Passion for championing & offering excellent customer service.
- Ability to make sound decisions for the business in line with Shariah requirements
- Have good PR/interpersonal skills, have outstanding communication and reporting skills, problem analysis and listening ability.
- Personality: A go-getter, enthusiastic, results oriented with excellent communication and social skills. A forward planner with clear focus, mature, reliable, hardworking and able to work without supervision.
- Sound knowledge of the Shariah Law (in-depth), Bank’s products and services; CBK Prudential Guidelines.
- Honest and with high integrity.
- Leadership & Management ability: Responsibility and ability to grow, support and develop talent within the Shariah Team.
- Computer skills: Must be adept in use of Ms Word, Excel, Access, Power-point, Internet and email.
